Sand Wash Basin Wild Horses
& Other Mustangs
When the storm clouds in the west Are quickly gathering The ponies they run wild there Before it rains You'll see their sleek dark bodies Brightly gleaming You know the fire is flying through Their brains... ~J. Bullock, "Ponies" (John Denver)
I try to get out to the wild horses about once a month; either in Sand Wash Basin or the McCullough Peaks Herd near Cody, Wyoming. The fighting scenes in the slide show images are from the McCullough Herd's; imagine shooting fighting stallions for over 5 hours in May while a storm was blowing in. Then a couple days later after leaving Yellowstone and the Tetons we headed to Sand Wash Basin to visit the wild horses there and shoot the foals who are just adorable. I love all wildlife; wolves and grizzlies, but horses have always been my heart and soul. After just a few hours with the horses here, I couldn't stand the thought of leaving and was already planning my trip back.
Portions of the proceeds from the sale of the images below is donated right back to the Sand Wash Basin horses to keep them free and so that when I want to escape, I can go back and join them again!

I've loved wild horses since I was a kid. I had always dreamed of seeing horses in the wild but until I moved to Colorado it seemed impossible. Once I moved here I started visiting the wild horse in Sand Wash Basin, McCullough Peaks and the Little Bookcliff's. I've also become more aware of how close we are to losing these horses forever. The images here on this page are available for purchase, the prices are noted above. The images are all copyrighted and owned by Laura Cowen/Performance Horse Photography. Please do not borrow these images without permission. A portion of all the sales of the wild horse images are donated back to the wild horses.
